CITIES APPEAL:

Fremantle, WA

The ICAN Cities Appeal was endorsed by Mayor Brad Pettit on 20 November 2018.

MOTION

The Cities Appeal is consistent with the formal and ongoing “Nuclear Free Fremantle” policy. Fremantle is the lead city for the Mayors for Peace network in Australia.

The Mayor has communicated the City of Fremantle’s endorsement of the Cities Appeal to Australia’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Senator Marise Payne, and the Shadow Foreign Affairs Minister, Senator Penny Wong.

2020: Australian Local Government Association

The City of Fremantle submitted a motion in support of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons to the Australian Local Government Association (ALGA)  for discussion at the 2020 National General Assembly. 

In August 2020, after receiving submissions from local councils across the nation, the Australian Local Government Association board wrote to the Senator the Hon. Marise Payne Minister for Foreign Affairs with a message: Councils urge the Australian Government to sign and ratify the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
