CITIES APPEAL:

Brimbank, VIC

The ICAN Cities Appeal was endorsed by the Brimbank City Council in August 2020.

MOTION

Brimbank City Council (BCC) would like to acknowledge the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) on the work it has done to advocate for the abolition of Nuclear Weapons.

The Federal Member for Calwell, Maria Vamvakinou MP, wrote to Council back on 7th April 2020 to seek our endorsement of the ICAN Cities Appeal, which Council joined and supported, along with our neighbouring councils of Hume and Maribyrnong, in calling for the Commonwealth Government to sign the Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

Council acknowledges the tragedy of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings along with its victims and survivors. Council also shares ICAN’s concerns about the grave threat of nuclear weapons pose to communities around the world and the right for every world citizen to live in a society that is free from this threat.

Thank you once again for contacting BCC in relation to this matter, and I look forward to continue working with other councils in advocating for a more peaceful and harmonious world that is free from nuclear weapons.
