Shellharbour, NSW

The ICAN Cities Appeal was endorsed by Shellharbour City Council on 3 September, 2019.

Council at its meeting of 3 September 2019 considered a report in relation to ICAN Cities Appeal.

At the meeting the Council resolved the following:

Shellharbour City is deeply concerned about the grave threat that nuclear weapons pose to communities throughout the world. We firmly believe that our residents have the right to live in a world free of this threat. Any use of nuclear weapons whether deliberate or accidently, would have catastrophic far reaching and long lasting consequences for people and the environment. Therefore, we warmly welcome the adoption of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons by the United Nations in 2017, and we call upon the Australian Federal Government to sign and ratify it without delay.

Therefore Council has written to the Australian Federal Government to sign and ratify it without delay.

Yours sincerely,

Councillor Marianne Saliba, Mayor

The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) is a coalition of non-governmental organisations in more than one hundred countries promoting adherence to and implementation of the treaty.

ICAN was awarded the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize for our work to raise awareness of the devastating humanitarian impacts of nuclear weapons and for our role in achieving the treaty.
