Candidates
2025 FEDERAL ELECTION
Parliamentarians played a major role in realising the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. More than 300 federal, state and territory parliamentarians from across the political spectrum have pledged to work for Australia to join the treaty by signing the ICAN Parliamentary Pledge.
The Parliamentary Pledge is a commitment by parliamentarians around the world to work for their government to join the treaty.
All candidates for the 2025 Australian federal election are now invited to sign the “Candidates Pledge” to commit their support for the nuclear weapon ban treaty and its goals. If elected, pledging candidates will be added to the ICAN Parliamentary Pledge.
THE PLEDGE
If elected, I wish to add my name to the ICAN Parliamentary Pledge in support of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons:
“We, the undersigned parliamentarians,
warmly welcome the adoption of the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons on 7 July 2017 as a significant step towards the realization of a nuclear-weapon-free world.
We share the deep concern expressed in the preamble about the catastrophic humanitarian consequences that would result from any use of nuclear weapons and we recognize the consequent need to eliminate these inhumane and abhorrent weapons.
As parliamentarians, we pledge to work for the signature and ratification of this landmark treaty by our respective countries, as we consider the abolition of nuclear weapons to be a global public good of the highest order and an essential step to promote the security and well-being of all peoples.”
HOW TO PLEDGE:
Candidates can pledge their support for the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons by sending an email to australia@icanw.org indicating that they wish to be added to the Candidates Pledge list. Alternatively, send us a scanned copy or image of the signed Candidates Pledge.
If elected, candidates will be automatically added to the list of signatories to the ICAN Parliamentary Pledge and celebrated as a supporter of this groundbreaking treaty.
