The ICAN Cities Appeal was endorsed by the Cockburn Council on 24 July, 2019.
STATEMENT
“On behalf of the City of Cockburn, I, His Worship Mayor Logan K. Howlett, JP endorse the ICAN Cities Appeal.
Further, on the 14 July 2011, the City of Cockburn Council resolved to join the Mayors for Peace organisation and to sign a pledge to support the abolition of nuclear weapons.
The ICAN Cities Appeal is consistent with this pledge and therefore the City of Cockburn endorses the ICAN Appeal.”

2020: Cockburn commemorates 75th anniversaries of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
The City of Cockburn commemorated the 75th Anniversaries of the nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6th & 9th, 2021, planting commemorative trees in collaboration with Mayors for Peace Fremantle.
Mayors for Peace, and City of Cockburn commnunity members plant trees as part of Hiroshima and Nagasaki commemorative events.
2025: Cockburn commemorates 80th anniversaries of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
Eighty kites flew high as local students planted 20 Jacaranda saplings at Legacy Park in Cockburn Central, to mark the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.
It was the City’s 40th annual Hiroshima Day commemoration which have added hundreds of trees to Cockburn’s canopy since the Council’s 1986 decision which began the tradition.
The council also unveilled a new commemorative park bench with a plaque honouring the past, inspiring peace, and fostering hope. The day concluded with a morning tea featuring traditional Japanese activities to further celebrate and acknowledge this important occasion.
Jacaranda mimosifolia are a favourite food tree for Black Cockatoo.
