A WILL FOR NUCLEAR ABOLITION

GIFT IN WILL

Your commitment to ending nuclear weapons can live on after you’re gone. Nuclear weapons threaten everything we hold dear, but a global shift is underway. Help our work continue to see every last nuclear weapon dismantled.

Your will represents what is important to your life. Discuss your wishes with your family to ensure they understand that your charitable gifts are meaningful to you. If you have already prepared your will, you can still include a gift to ICAN Australia by adding a Codicil or when you next update your current will.

While you rest in peace, we will work to ensure nuclear weapons rust in pieces.

HOW TO LEAVE A GIFT

Here are some ways you could leave a gift:

RESIDUARY GIFT

You can provide for your family and friends first and leave what is left over of what you own (the residue) to ICAN Australia. A residuary gift is what is left over after loved ones have been provided for and all expenses and claims paid. As your estate increases in value, so does your bequest. The value of your gift does not diminish with inflation as does a gift of a fixed amount.

Suggested wording:

“I give the residue of my estate free from all debts (secured and unsecured) and all duties and taxes (whether federal or state) payable in respect of my estate to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons Australia Inc (ABN 96 291 421 937) (“ICAN Australia”) for its general purposes, and I declare that the receipt of an authorised officer of ICAN Australia will constitute a sufficient discharge to my executors of their duties in respect of the gift .”

PERCENTAGE OR NOMINATED PORTION

Your estate can be divided among a number of people and/or organisations.
Your gift can be a percentage or proportion of the whole your estate, or of what is left over (the residue) after individual gifts have been made.

If you feel undecided about leaving a gift to ICAN Australia in your will because you are unsure how much money will be available in the future, a residuary gift or nominated portion can overcome this hurdle. There is no need to nominate a specific value for your gift.

Suggested wording:

“I give [insert percentage] %… of my estate free from all debts (secured and unsecured) and all duties and taxes (whether federal or state) payable in respect of my estate to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons Australia Inc (ABN 96 291 421 937) (“ICAN Australia”) for its general purposes, and I declare that the receipt of an authorised officer of ICAN Australia will constitute a sufficient discharge to my executors of their duties in respect of the gift.”

SPECIFIC GIFT OF REAL OR PERSONAL PROPERTY

You can give a specific asset to ICAN Australia. ICAN Australia can receive all forms of property including shares and may be able to be the beneficiary of a life insurance policy. Please get in touch and we can investigate this for you.

TRUST

You can establish a trust within your will that allows a spouse (or nominated person) to live in and use your real (residential or investment) property during their lifetime. After they pass away, the capital asset (i.e the property) can pass to ICAN Australia.

Similarly, you can create a trust which is comprised of a capital cash amount that allows your spouse (or other nominated person) to receive the income derived from the capital amount. After they pass away, the capital amount can pass to ICAN Australia.

CASH SUM

You can give a specific cash sum. Note though, that in the time between making your will and when the sum is received by ICAN Australia, the value of the gift can be diminished by inflation, or not have grown as the value of the estate has increased.

A GIFT IN MEMORY

You may wish to make your gift through your will in memory of someone special. ICAN Australia will honour this gift in a way that you consider appropriate, whether public or private.
